José Unda paints in series vs individually titling paintings

Cuantum Voice series

José's Quantum Voice painting is inspired by his reading about quantum physics and the exploration of tiny particles, alongside his interest in Oriental philosophy and the complexity of space and time. Depicted in the painting is a shape reminiscent of a large dark hand. It can be seen as either a hand to build a new future or a hand to repress us. It's up to the viewer how to interpret it. 'Quantum Living' allows us to see our role in life as that of the active creator, rather than just the passive observer, creatively shaping our experience in a conscious and connected universe.

Arcane Codes Series

Art serves as a pathway to explore the unconscious mind. The deliberate choice of dark colors in this series represents mystery—the unknown depths of inner experience that resist easy comprehension. Against this mysterious backdrop, the shapes and forms provide contrast, their defined boundaries offering structure within the ambiguous darkness.

Each work in the series centers on a key shape rendered in a single color, creating a visual statement that captures a specific moment of mental experience. These forms become psychological markers, illustrating the internal processes and states of mind that often remain hidden from conscious awareness. Through this artistic exploration, the series reveals what unfolds within our minds, making visible the invisible movements of thought and feeling that shape our inner lives.

Calligraphy Series

Inspired by Chinese calligraphy, I aimed to create a beautiful and captivating piece influenced by that style. I experimented with Western calligraphy, using Chinese brushes to complete the series. This was the last series that I used brushes to paint.

Honeycomb Series

Concern for the environment and bees is paramount. Bees are essential for human survival. This serves as a declaration for our own existence and a homage to them. We repeatedly encounter these issues and cannot overlook the problem. Just as water is vital for human life. I blended the colors to represent the hue of honey and combined it with sugar to observe the outcome.

Cosmic Dance Series

This series emerged from the intersection of Indian philosophy and science, exploring how ancient cosmological understanding bridges with contemporary knowledge. The black represents the profound depth of space—the infinite void that Indian philosophy recognizes as fundamental to existence. Against this cosmic darkness, red shapes emerge, their color directly inspired by the volcanic landscape that surrounds my environment.

Working with the challenging combination of black and red was an intentional risk. These colors resist easy harmony, creating tension that mirrors the dynamic relationship between the vast emptiness of space and the fiery creative forces of volcanic activity. Through experimentation and play with this difficult palette, I allowed forms to emerge organically, letting the interplay between cosmic depth and earthly fire guide the creative process until something meaningful surfaced from the contrast.

Cells Series

In the Cells series, José explores the way that cell-like patterns repeat themselves at both the macro and micro levels in the universe. Scientists have found that nature’s order is emerging in patterns large and small, from the vast cosmic web to the tiny arrangement of genes on chromosomes. What we see in a cell through the microscope is similar to what we see in the sky through a telescope. José explains that there is no rivalry between the macro and micro, but rather an important connection, similar to that of the human pysche (comprised of mind and soul or spirit). Within the Cells series, José uses organic and fluid soft shapes to represent cells. The dark background is used to highlight the brighter shape in the foreground

Photons Series

José's Photons series came to him because of his lived experience and fascination with science

and the study of light. A photon is a particle of light which essentially is a packet of

electromagnetic radiation -- the basic unit of all light. José says that in Ecuador there is light for ~12 hours a day and the light is generous. Much like Johannes Vermeer, a Dutch painter in the 1600s, who was well-known for his depiction of light, José uses his own fascination to interpret light in his series called 'Photons'. He uses mixed media and explores acrylics, oils and his own visual language, but what the viewer sees is a reflection of the viewer's own state of mind. In nature we don't have rigid lines, and everything is organic – he reflects that in his work.

Pi Series

The Pi series explores the well-known mathematical concept and its importance in physics. Although José hasn't had a chance to study science, he greatly admires modern physics and how it has transformed our understanding of the world.  In Pi, José uses is a minimalist black and white colour palette but when one looks up close at the canvas, one can see many more colours in the background. The complex array of colours are not overtly apparent on first glance. In the painting, the symbol and shape of Pi is represented, numerous times, in almost a musical style, with lots of movement and a code-like encryption motif.

Shadows Series

Each of us has our own shadow, formed out of our attempts to adapt to cultural expectations.

In analytical psychology, the shadow is part of the unconscious mind and is composed of

repressed ideas or desires and shortcomings. In our shadow we keep secrets and yet the

shadow can reveal important things to us. José believes we can explore how our own shadow

can be both a good ally and an enemy to us.

In José's Shadow paintings, there are black shapes, which are not only dead space, but rather

the dark shapes have many bright colours within them that reveal themselves upon closer look.

José painted the Shadow series during the pandemic, when there was a shadow cast upon all

humankind. Collectively, we experienced something bad, but we overcame it. In the shadow,

metaphorically speaking, we can find the light. Difficult experiences can be ones to learn from

and we can become wiser and stronger as a result.

Photons 2

Revisiting Photons with a whole batch of new paintings!

Solar Calendar Series

The Solar Calendar series explores humanity's relationship with time through the lens of ancient wisdom. In our culture, time holds profound significance, shaping every aspect of how we organize our existence. The ancient Mexican calendar, developed thousands of years ago, served as more than a mere counting system—it was a guide for living. The lunar calendar instructed people when to plant seeds, when to prepare for winter's arrival, and how to align their lives with natural rhythms.

This calendar system continues to dominate modern life, dictating our schedules, seasons, and cycles just as it did for our ancestors. The fundamental concept remains unchanged: time flows continuously, and our lives remain forever bound to its passage. We are still creatures of calendar time, our daily existence structured by the same cyclical understanding that guided ancient civilizations in their relationship with the cosmos.

Temples of Light Series

The luminous country in which I reside is indeed a temple, as we experience 12 hours of daylight each day. It serves as a tribute to light. Light represents LIFE. Light encompasses all colors. The illumination is abundant, and the mountains provide a pleasing contrast. I am endeavoring to explore this contrast.

The Rights Series

Seville, Spain, and Rome, Italy, and is associated with the sacred group established by the conquistadors. It is conducted by the Archbishop of the church. These rights are considered special. The ritual itself is distinctly unique. I try to capture that in this series.

Valdivias Series

This pertains to our civilization. For 7000-8000 years, women have held the power of the goddess Valdivia. The woman in the household is the one who has the final say. It encompasses certain aspects where women are in control and the movement for women's liberation. Men were born of women. In the Valdivian culture, it was indeed the women who held the reins of power. I explore this concept within this series with some of the abstract imagery being influenced by the feminine.

Time Wheel Series

The Wheel of Time series explores the fundamental nature of time through its central metaphor of the wheel. Time operates on the principle that what goes around comes around, yet never in precisely the same way—this is why the wheel appears broken and distorted rather than perfect. While time remains constant for humanity, never disappearing yet never truly repeating, its imperfect circular nature creates something extraordinary: an interior space within the distorted wheel.

This inner space represents potential and creation, like a womb where something entirely new can emerge. What develops within this space remains open to interpretation, but it embodies the possibility that arises from time's imperfect repetitions. The wheel's distortion isn't a flaw—it's the very mechanism that allows for novelty within pattern, for the unprecedented to emerge from the cyclical.
